Dr Marie-Luce Desgrandchamps, Visiting Scholar at HCRI, has published a new book.

11 April 2018

Dr Desgrandchamps’ book, entitled L’humanitaire en guerre civile: La crise du Biafra (1967-1970) (Humanitarian aid in civil war: The crisis of Biafra (1967-1970)) has just been published in France at the Presses universitaires de Rennes.

In May 1967, Nigeria, the Republic of Biafra in West Africa declared its independence, leading to civil war and famine. Dr Desgrandchamps presents an international history of this conflict and its metamorphosis into an international crisis. It shows how emergency aid becomes, with the end of colonial empires, one of the expressions of the reconfiguration of the relationship between Africa and the West.

Dr Marie-Luce Desgrandchamps received her PhD in history in 2014 from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Geneva, where she has also worked as a lecturer. She will be based at HCRI until January 2019 to carry out her post doctorate research project on the beginnings of the Red Cross Movement in Africa.

More work can be found on Dr Desgrandchamps' Academia Edu profile.
