Schools and outreach
Connect with HCRI! Look out for events, taster sessions, and visits for sixth forms and schools
Every year we work closely with schools and colleges both local to Manchester and further afield, whether that’s through UoM Open days, bespoke talks, or by sharing educational resources.
HCRI Speaker Visits
Lecturers at HCRI are willing and able to visit GCSE and A-Level student groups and give short talks on HCRI and their specialist topics, be it humanitarianism and conflict response, global health, international disaster management, or peacebuilding. We can also arrange for HCRI ‘Student Ambassadors’ to visit, whom are current students who can give some insight into life and study at University of Manchester.
- HCRI Introduction and Information session, for sixth formers - YouTube
- Arrange a Speaker Visit via the SALC Schools Outreach Officer
- Attend a Young People in Humanitarianism Conference, hosted by HCRI students
Teaching resources
You can freely access ‘After Maria’, a graphic novella by our former Lecturer Dr Gemma Sou, exploring how low-income Puerto Rican families recovered from the impacts of Hurricane Maria. The resource also includes:
- Information about research on disaster impacts, disaster recovery and media representations of disasters
- Discussion points
- Further reading
Open Days and tours
The best way to get a feel for what The University of Manchester is all about it to come and visit us on one of our Open Days. Open Days give a chance to find out about academic and social life at the university, explore the city and the ‘Oxford Road Corridor’, and discuss courses with programme representatives.
